  • Online Shopping Safety Tips

  • 1 - Make sure the sites you shop from use a secure server.
The URL (address of the site) should begin with https and a closed padlock icon or a key should appear at the bottom right corner of your browser window whenever you enter any secure information (ex: passwords or credit card information).
This icon lets you know the personal information you send will be scrambled or encrypted.
  • 2 - Make sure you know your seller. Does the merchant have a phone number listed on their site? Don't trust a seller that only provides an e-mail address.
  • 3 - Try not use a public computer to make purchases with. Thieves can record what you type on shared computers with keystroke monitoring software.
  • 4 -Log out of online stores completely before leaving a site. Not logging out properly can leave your account open for others to access and abuse.
  • 5 - Use a credit card for your online purchases. In the event of a fraudulent purchase, credit card companies limit the liabilities to you.
  • 6 - Keep records of all your online purchases. Immediately report any discrepancies to the online merchant. Shred or completely destroy any old records you are discarding.
  • 7 - Be wary of anyone asking for your personal information. No reputable merchant or institution will ever ask you for your private information via an email.
  • 8 - Get a credit report every couple of months to check for any suspicious activity.
  • 9 - Never use the same password for everything! Use different passwords for multiple sites. Always use passwords with at least 8 characters in it. Peppering numbers into your password will make it harder to break.
  • 10 - Always read the merchants privacy statement. make sure they have a privacy statement or do not shop with them.
