Putting Together Your Own Closet Organizing System

Getting your closet into shape requires having somewhere to put all the items you intend to store. You can go out and spend thousands on a pre-made closet system, you can spend even more to have a company come in and create a custom system, or you can make your own with a few key pieces that you can buy inexpensively or that you may even already have around your house.

  • Consider Your Needs
When planning your closet, be sure you have plenty of room for hanging items and that you allow for enough clearance below them so they arenít bunched up at the bottom. Next you need to figure out the most efficient way to organize your clothes. Do you need lots of drawer space? Do you have a lot of seasonal items? Determine your space needs first.

  • Research Options
In certain cases, shelving may be most useful to you. If you keep a lot of sweaters in the closet, bins, or containers that hold the tops and sit on the shelf would be most helpful. If you have more t-shirts and other items that you keep folded, drawers may a priority. If you have a large shoe collection, shoe storage cabinets might be the most reasonable option.

  • Measure, Measure, Measure
Before you buy a thing, measure the closet. Then measure it again. Next, measure the pieces that you plan to move from another room, like a dresser or trunk. You want to be sure you have enough space.
