Going Green: Baby Edition
There are many things you can do to “green” your baby, or to be more environmentally conscious about caring for your new little one. Before baby arrives is an ideal time to assess your own eco-footprint and to look for ways to be kinder to the earth in all aspects of your life. Thinking about it beforehand makes it easier to implement after you bring the baby into your home—and, of course, it will make you feel good to be able to bring you child into a home that is as environmentally friendly as possible.Diapers
There’s debate about whether the washing cloth diapers needs negates their environmental advantage, but they certainly should be considered. A diaper service can help with the washing (doing so in bulk, which saves water, etc.), and many cloth diapers are made with eco-friendly materials such as hemp, bamboo, or organic cotton. There are also disposable diapers available that are plastic-free and biodegradable.
Clothing and Bedding
Choosing organic cotton, hemp, or bamboo baby nursery bedding and clothing can make an impact as well. They also can be easier on baby’s sensitive skin. There are many companies that make a variety of organic clothing and bedding, so you should have a variety to choose from.
Laundry and Cleaning
Pure soap and warm water are all you need to get your baby’s things (and your own) clean. Look into homemade cleaning products for your home as well, which cuts down on the chemicals in your home.
