Duvet Covers 101
Down comforters are an investment, and in order to protect that investment, you need a duvet cover
.What is a Duvet Cover?
A duvet cover is like a pillowcase for your down comforter. It protects the comforter from body oils and dirt so it needs to be cleaned less often. They come in many different colors and patterns and are sometimes sold in sets that include pillow shams and decorative pillows.
What to Look For
When buying a duvet cover, there are several things to look for: size, thread count and closure type.
Duvet covers come in the same sizes as all bedding: twin, full/queen, king and California king. Check the size of your comforter before purchasing a cover. When in doubt, measure the comforter first.
Thread count refers to the number of threads in each square inch. The higher the thread count, the softer the cover, just like sheets. Thread counts vary between about 100 to about 1,000. A good quality duvet cover will have a thread count of 300 or more.
The open end of the duvet cover usually has some type of closure system. This can be buttons, snaps, ties, hook and loop strips or a zipper. Take a close look at the enclosure and check for sturdiness; a poor quality closure can break or fray after repeated washings.
Duvet covers come in a variety of styles, patterns and materials to compliment any décor and a are a quick and convenient way to freshen up your bedroom.
