College Dorm Store
Congratulations! Your daughter or son has graduated high school and is going to college. If your child is living in an on-campus dormitory, the school usually provides at least a bed, desk and bureau. Before school starts, check with the school to find out what the room has in the way of furniture. If it has a bed, it is most likely a twin XL, but check anyway.
Usually, the school provides contact information if your kid is sharing a dorm room. Contacting the new roommate by phone or email is a good icebreaker and provides a way to collaborate about general room decor before meeting. Additionally, your college-bound student can use the Internet to exchange pictures of accessories including bedding and other items.
The first place to start is bedding. Sheets for a Twin XL measure 39 x 80 inches, if the bed is a standard twin the measurements are 39 x 76. Sheets come in a rainbow of colors, patterns and themes. Your college student may want to coordinate or contrast with the choices made by his/her roommate.
Pillows come in many varieties such as, foam, down and other fillings. They also come in many sizes that include: Standard size - 20x 26 inches, Queen 20 x 30 inches, King - 20 x 36 inches. The usual recommendation is one standard size pillow for a single bed. However, many kids like more than one pillow and they are stackable.
An Alternative is a Euro pillow that is square and is 26 x 26 inches. If used with a decorative sham it can a bit of decor to the room. It works especially well on a Twin XL mattress since the mattress is longer. A Euro pillow is very comfortable for propping up in bed for reading, studying or watching TV.
Bed Pads, Blankets and Comforters
The standard depth for a twin bed pad is 7 -14 1/2 inches. The mattress pad gives extra comfort to the bed, It come in both regular single bed length and Twin XL.
Blankets and comforters provide warmth and comfort. Twin comforters are 68 x 86 inches. Both regular type comforters and down filled comforters are the same size. If you choose a blanket, it will be slightly larger, measuring 68 x 90 inches.
It is highly recommended that blankets and comforters be washed in commercial size washers. Standard size washers are too small to handle them without damage.
