Cozy Up to Chenille Bedding

Few fabrics are as ideal for the bedroom as chenille. Chenille bedding is soft and cozy, exactly what you’re looking for when it’s time to settle in after a long day.

Chenille gets its name from the French word for caterpillar. It's made by wrapping short lengths of fabric around a tightly wound core. The edges of the outside fabric stick out at right angles from the core, making each long strand of chenille fabric soft and fuzzy, like a caterpillar. Chenille can be made from several different types of fibers, such as rayon, acrylic or olefin, but is most commonly made from cotton.

The fabric has been around since the eighteenth century, but reached the height of popularity in the 1930's. Today, chenille is used to create a romantic, vintage decor look, although some elegant and striking contemporary chenille bedspread designs are available. More often than not, though, an ensemble made from this soft, sensuous fabric will feature traditional romantic accents such as roses and other flowers as well as quilted patterns and geometric shapes. Chenille bedspreads, shams and bedskirts can be found in a variety of colors and patterns, but many lean toward classic shades like white, off-white and mint.

In addition to bedding, you can find accent pillows and rugs made from chenille to complete the look of your room.
