Choosing Bedding for Baby

The crib or cradle is often the focal point of a nursery, so choosing cradle bedding is an important step to take. The goal is to create a warm, safe, beautiful spot for the new arrival. Choices abound, from traditional-style baby bedding to more sophisticated design options. But first there are a few things you need consider before you settle on particular bedding set.

If you already have a decorating scheme in mind, be sure the bedding you choose will work with it, both in color and in mood. Sometimes colors can coordinate, but the “feel” is off. If you haven’t come up with an idea, finding a bedding set that you love can jumpstart your creativity and give you a direction.

When outfitting a crib or cradle, keep in mind that babies need just the basics: a crib sheet and a bumper. Some sets have coordinating blankets and pillows, which look nice but must be removed when putting the baby down to sleep. The extras can suffocate an infant who is unable to pull bedding off his or her head.

Comfort is a big consideration: You want anything that touches your baby to be soft and comforting. Cottons and flannels work well for nursery bedding because they are softer than acrylics or other synthetic fabrics.

Be sure to choose bedding made especially for cribs, cradles or bassinets. Most reputable manufacturers take care to ensure that their products are safe for very small children, so baby products are the safest option.
