Choosing An Area Rug For Kids

If you are redecorating your childís bedroom or playroom, one of the many design decisions you must make revolves around the flooring. Whether you choose wall-to-wall carpet, tile, laminate, or wood, chances are you will consider an area rug.

Area rugs serve several purposes in child spaces. On hard flooring they provide a soft, skid-resistant surface to help protect children from slips and falls. If you have carpet, an area rug can help protect it from the inevitable wear and tear that can occur where children play frequently.

So how to choose the best kids rugs? Cost and durability are certainly big factors. You want good quality so it will last, but you also donít want to spend a fortune because kids can be tough on rugs. Style is another consideration. Childrenís rugs come in many styles and colors. Some feature beloved characters from movies and television, while others have colorful letters, numbers, and other educational patterns. Let your taste and color scheme guide you. One option is to choose an area rug that you love and design the room around it, letting it determine colors and other touches. Itís best to keep things light, choosing colors and patterns that are more childlike and whimsical rather than bold and serious.

Another consideration is cleaning. Because these rugs will get a lot of traffic, and because kids can be messy, youíll have to clean it a lot. Choosing one with a stain-resistant material, but easy to clean, is important.
